About this appAI proposal
Tollgate is a spend guard for developers who use AI coding assistants on a monthly plan. It shows how much of your included allowance is left, warns you before you reach the limit, and shows what each request costs once you pass it.
Pay-per-token charges never start by surprise. When your allowance runs out, Tollgate asks you to choose: stop, or continue up to a cap you set. Prepaid money is shown as a balance and a spending limit as a cap. The two are never mixed up.
It works with usage exports and API keys you bring yourself, and keeps a plain-language record of every charge. If you need to dispute a bill, you can export that record for support.

- Why this name
- A tollgate is where you see the price and choose to pass. That is the moment this product protects: a visible price and your consent.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Warnings before the limit
Alerts at thresholds you pick, such as 70, 90 and 100 percent of your plan allowance, by push or email.

Opt-in overage
Pay-per-token use is off by default. You turn it on with a cap and an end date, and it switches itself off after.
No member yet
Live cost per request
Each request shows its model and cost, so an expensive model choice is visible while you work.

Hard caps through a gateway
For API-key use, route calls through Tollgate and it refuses requests once your daily or monthly cap is hit.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Shared outputs. Developers export the charge record and share it with support, or share a team spend report link with a manager or finance contact. Each export and link carries the Tollgate name.
- Do they become customers?
- Support staff and finance readers mostly only see it. Managers who receive a team report could become Team buyers. Test whether report recipients sign up.
- First customers
- Engineering leads at small software teams of 5 to 30 developers who pay for AI coding assistant seats and have been surprised by an overage bill.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and developer forums: Post a plain write-up on subscription-to-overage billing in threads where users report surprise charges, and offer the free tier.
- Direct outreach to team leads: Message leads who posted about surprise bills and offer a free setup for their team.
- First milestone
- Ten developers connect an account and five pay for Solo or Team within 60 days of launch.

RisksAI inference
- PlatformClosed assistants may offer no usage API. Tollgate may only see CSV exports or pasted data, which are slower and cannot enforce a cap on those plans.
- CommercialThe only evidence is one small forum thread. Developers may accept a vendor's own alerts, or a vendor may add opt-in overage itself.
- TechnicalA gateway adds latency and a point of failure in the coding loop. It must fail open or closed by user choice.
- DataUsers hand over API keys and usage data. A leak would end trust, so keys need encryption and minimal storage.
- Intellectual propertyReading another product's usage data may breach its terms of service. This needs a legal read before launch.
