About this appAI proposal
Rateline compares the true per-unit cost of your AI subscription with the cost of extra credits. Enter your plan, quota and credit pack prices once. It shows what a unit costs inside the plan and beyond it, so a top-up never comes as a surprise.
Built for people on fixed-price AI plans who sometimes run past their quota. Users of one such service report that credits cost far more per unit than the subscription. Rateline puts that gap on screen before you buy, and tells you when a bigger tier would be cheaper.
Rateline does not resell credits or connect to your AI account. You log usage by hand or paste a usage export, and the math stays in plain view.

- Why this name
- A rate line is the line on a rate card where a unit gets its price. Rateline is short, easy to say, and says what it shows.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.

From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.

How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Shared outputs. Users publish a link to a cost comparison or monthly spend summary, for example to a manager or in a forum thread about pricing. Viewers see the numbers and the Rateline name.
- Do they become customers?
- Viewers of a shared link are often fellow AI plan users who could become paying customers. Test whether link views lead to sign-ups and rate card creation.
- First customers
- Solo developers and small team leads who pay for a high-tier AI coding or agent subscription and sometimes buy extra credits.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News: Post a free calculator for plan versus credit cost in threads where users complain about credit pricing.
- Developer subreddits: Share the top-up check in communities for AI coding tools and answer plan choice questions.
- Indie developer newsletters: Offer a short guide to avoiding bill shock with a link to the free tier.
- First milestone
- Fifty people save a rate card and ten pay for Plus within 60 days of launching the free calculator.

RisksAI inference
- CommercialThe evidence is one Hacker News post with 10 points. Many users may not care enough about credit costs to pay for a separate tool.
- DataRate cards are entered by hand and AI vendors change prices often. Stale data would give wrong advice and erode trust.
- PlatformVendors could add their own cost calculators or unify pricing, which would remove the problem the tool solves.
- TechnicalUsage exports differ between services. Parsing pasted data reliably across formats may take more work than a first version allows.
