About this appAI proposal
Tidygrid is a spreadsheet built around an AI assistant instead of having one added on. Describe what you want in plain words: clean this column, build the lookup, summarize by region. Tidygrid does it in the sheet.
Every AI edit appears first as a highlighted preview you accept or reject. Formulas come with a one-line explanation, and cleaning steps are saved as a recipe you can run again on next month's file.
It is for people who live in spreadsheets and lose hours to formulas and data cleanup, alone or in small teams. It runs in the browser as an installable app and opens CSV and Excel files.

- Why this name
- Tidy says what people want from messy data; grid says spreadsheet. Two plain words, easy to say and spell.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Ask in plain words
Type a request and get the formula, column or summary built in the sheet. No separate chat window to copy from.

Preview before change
AI edits show as highlighted cells with before and after values. Accept all, accept some, or undo.

Formulas explained
Each generated formula has a short plain-language note, so you can check it and learn from it.
No member yet
Reusable cleaning recipes
Trim, split, dedupe and fix dates once. Save the steps and replay them on the next file.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Shared outputs. Users share read-only sheet links and exported reports. Viewers see a small 'made with Tidygrid' footer and can copy the sheet, with its cleaning recipe, into their own free account.
- Do they become customers?
- Viewers can become paying users when they copy a sheet and run its recipe on their own data. Test how many link viewers sign up, and how many of those pay.
- First customers
- Freelance bookkeepers and small-business finance managers who clean exported bank and invoice data in Excel or Google Sheets every month.
- Where to reach them
- Accounting communities: Share a cleaning-recipe template for bank exports in bookkeeper forums and groups, with a free account link.
- Short demo videos: Post before-and-after clips of messy exports turned into clean sheets in one request.
- Hacker News launch: Post a Show HN focused on the preview-before-change approach and ask for feedback.
- First milestone
- Ten paying bookkeepers or finance managers, each running a saved recipe on at least two monthly files.

RisksAI inference
- CommercialSum Buddy already has paying customers and Excel and Google Sheets are free or cheap. Users may not switch for the preview-and-recipe idea alone.
- TechnicalA spreadsheet engine with formulas, large files and Excel compatibility is a lot of work. Imports may break complex workbooks, macros or pivot tables.
- AILanguage models can produce wrong formulas or changes that look right. Previews and explanations reduce this but do not remove it.
- CommercialAI usage costs scale with requests. Flat monthly tiers could lose money on heavy users unless limits are tuned.
- DataBusiness and financial data is sent to a model provider. Buyers will want clear privacy terms and no training on their data.
