About this appAI proposal
Pourline helps concrete subcontractors turn plan PDFs into a reviewed takeoff. It sorts the sheets, finds footings, grade beams and other concrete elements, follows the cross-references between sheets, and expands each element into its full set of line items: volume, formwork, and rebar by bar size.
The estimator stays in charge. Every detected element shows where it came from on the plan, every calculation can be opened, and every number can be overridden. Nothing is hidden behind a single total, so a senior estimator can check the work instead of redoing it.
It is built for concrete only, not for all trades. Results export to the Excel workbook your firm already uses, so your pricing method and bid process stay as they are.

- Why this name
- A pour line is where a concrete placement ends, a term estimators know. The name is two plain words joined and signals concrete and order.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Sheet sorting
Upload a plan set and each page is labelled as foundation plan, detail, schedule or other, so you start from the sheets that matter.

Concrete element detection
Footings, grade beams, walls and slabs are outlined on the plan for you to accept, fix or delete.

Cross-reference following
Section marks and detail callouts are followed to the referenced sheet, so dimensions and rebar come from the right detail.

Assembly expansion
One element becomes full line items: concrete volume, formwork area, rebar by bar size with laps and development lengths.

What it could be worthEstimate
What a software business making this much sells for today, from real deals. Pick a monthly revenue.
If it makes
Worth about
$194,000
Sale range $132,000 to $263,000
$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- No loop in the product. Pourline is used inside one estimating team. The exported workbook is the firm's own bid sheet, so it carries no visible brand to other parties. Growth comes from direct sales, content and word of mouth among estimators.
- Do they become customers?
- No built-in loop. Test whether estimators who see a takeoff time cut on one real bid will bring it to their firm, and whether firms pay after the trial.
- First customers
- Small and mid-size concrete subcontractors doing foundations and flatwork, with one to three estimators who cannot bid all the work they are offered.
- Where to reach them
- Direct outreach to estimators: Contact estimators at foundation contractors and offer to run one past bid's plan set as a free pilot.
- Construction forums and groups: Share before and after takeoff walkthroughs in estimating communities and trade groups, including Hacker News.
- Concrete trade associations: Offer a short talk or demo at local chapter events and in their newsletters.
- First milestone
- Five concrete subcontractors each run a live bid through Pourline, and at least three agree to pay after the trial.
Why people already pay for this
- VerifiedHacker News post received 41 points and 14 comments
- Public claimEstimators manually spend weeks or months on a single bid, tracing every concrete element by hand into spreadsheets with 300+ line items
- AI inferenceMost concrete firms have too few estimators to bid on most available work, making slow estimation the biggest business bottleneck
- AI inferenceEstimators will not adopt new tools because they distrust them and worry about errors in million-to-billion-dollar bids, after previous products failed

RisksAI inference
- AIDetection errors on messy or scanned plans could erode trust fast. Estimators already distrust tools after earlier failures, so accuracy must be measured on real plan sets.
- DataTraining and testing need many real concrete plan sets with known correct takeoffs. Without partner contractors who share them, quality will stall.
- CommercialEstimators may not switch from their own spreadsheets, or from the incumbent, unless time saved on a real bid is clear and quick.
- TechnicalFollowing cross-references and applying lap and development rules across varied drawing styles is hard to make reliable.
- Intellectual propertyPlan sheets belong to owners and designers. Contracts and storage terms must allow processing them securely.
