About this appAI proposal
Tallybook is double-entry bookkeeping for freelancers and very small businesses, built as an installable web app. Send invoices, log expenses, track stock and read clear reports without learning accounting terms first.
The books are yours. Every record exports to open formats (CSV and a plain ledger file) at any time, on any plan, so you are never locked in. Reports explain themselves in sentences, such as why profit moved this month.
It is aimed at people who find incumbent tools too costly or too rigid for their own workflow. A free plan covers one business; paid plans add hosting extras, more users and support.

- Why this name
- Tallybook joins 'tally', the old act of counting, with 'book', the ledger. Two plain words, easy to say. Trademark check still needed.

Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.

PricingAI proposal
Xero's pricing page lists paid plans from $7 to $75 a month and Akaunting's from $12 to $218 a month; Wave's prices are on request. Tiers are set near the low end of those, as a starting point to test.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Shared outputs. Each invoice goes to the client as a pay-and-view link with a small 'Made with Tallybook' footer on the free plan. Clients who are also small business owners see how it works.
- Do they become customers?
- Invoice recipients are often self-employed, so some could become customers, but this is unproven. Test how many invoice-link visitors click through and start a free book.
- First customers
- Solo freelance designers and developers in one country who invoice 5 to 30 clients and currently pay for an incumbent tool or use spreadsheets.
- Where to reach them
- Freelancer communities: Offer free migration help in forums and groups where freelancers discuss accounting tool costs.
- Open-source and indie circles: Post the export-first approach on developer forums and invite early testers to give feedback.
- Accountant referrals: Ask bookkeepers who serve freelancers to try the ledger export and recommend it.
- First milestone
- Twenty freelancers send real invoices in 30 days, and five of them pay for a hosted plan.

RisksAI inference
- CommercialFree open-source and low-priced rivals already exist, and Akaunting has a large community. Users may not pay to switch without a clear gain.
- RegulatoryTax rules, invoice formats and sales tax differ by country. Starting in one country limits reach but keeps compliance manageable.
- DataUsers must trust a new product with financial records. Migration from incumbents may lose detail, which could hurt confidence.
- TechnicalA correct double-entry ledger with offline sync needs careful conflict handling to avoid unbalanced books.
- AIPlain-language report explanations could state wrong reasons for changes. They need to be generated from computed figures and labeled clearly.
