About this appAI proposal
Spendgate is a proxy between your code and the APIs you pay for, especially LLM APIs. You set a budget per key, endpoint or feature. When calls reach the limit, Spendgate blocks them and tells you, instead of letting the bill grow until a provider alert arrives.
It is made for small teams and solo developers who build with APIs but have no enterprise spend controls. Provider alerts report after the money is gone. Spendgate decides before each call goes out and shows which code path or feature caused the spend.
If a key leaks or a loop goes wrong, pause that key in one tap from your phone. Nothing above your cap runs without your explicit approval.

- Why this name
- A gate is a plain image: calls pass through it, and it closes when spend goes over. Spend plus gate is easy to say and spell.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Hard spend caps
Set daily and monthly limits per key, endpoint or feature. Calls over the cap are blocked, not just reported.

Spike detection
Flags sudden jumps in call rate or cost against a rolling baseline and alerts you within moments.

One-tap kill switch
Pause a key or a whole project from your phone. Resume only when you approve it.

Cost attribution
Tag calls by feature, route or environment to see which code path produced each dollar.

Sale range $132,000 to $263,000
$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- No loop in the product. It runs behind the scenes in a developer's own code, so it is not visible to their users. Growth comes from content, community posts about runaway bills and developer search.
- Do they become customers?
- Reaching developers directly means they can pay. Test whether people who read a runaway bill story will route a real key through a proxy, and whether solo developers pay at all.
- First customers
- Small teams of 2 to 10 developers shipping products on LLM APIs, with no finance or platform staff to set enterprise spend controls.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and dev forums: Post a write-up on stopping runaway API bills, with an open-source client snippet and a free tier link.
- Hackathon organizers: Offer free capped keys for events, where shared keys are often exposed.
- Indie developer communities: Answer billing horror stories directly and offer a free setup for early users.
- First milestone
- Ten teams route live traffic through Spendgate and five pay for a plan within 60 days.
Why people already pay for this
- VerifiedHacker News post received 10 points and 3 comments
- Public claimA developer's bill for Gemini API usage jumped to $2,500 in a single day after an API key was used at a hackathon, with charges occurring every 30 minutes.
- Public claimThe cloud provider's support process for disputed charges is slow and unreliable, leaving developers waiting for waivers after unexpected large bills.

RisksAI inference
- TechnicalA proxy adds latency and becomes a single point of failure. If it goes down, customers' calls fail, so a fail-open or fail-closed choice must be offered.
- DataHolding customers' provider keys and request metadata makes Spendgate a high-value target. A breach would end trust.
- PlatformProviders may change pricing, token counting or streaming formats, and spend estimates can drift from the real bill.
- CommercialProviders may add native hard caps, and the evidence is thin (one post with 10 points). Demand beyond a few stories is unproven.
- TechnicalSpend is only known after a call completes, so long or streamed requests can overshoot a cap. Estimates are needed.
