About this appAI proposal
Slatebase is a hosted backend for teams who add a collaborative whiteboard or infinite canvas to their own app. You bring a free, open-licensed drawing SDK. Slatebase handles the part that is hard to run: live sync, cursors, access rules and saved history.
It is built for developers who want to avoid per-seat licence fees and avoid building a sync server from scratch. Connect with a small TypeScript client for React, React Native or plain JavaScript, set rooms and roles in a dashboard, and ship.
Unlike a licensed whiteboard SDK, the drawing layer stays open and yours. You pay only for hosting, support and the controls larger customers ask for, such as audit logs. Leaving means exporting your documents.

- Why this name
- A slate is a surface you draw on; base is the layer under it. The name says: your canvas on top, our hosting underneath.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Live rooms with presence
Real-time shared canvases with cursors, selections and who-is-here, reached through one client for React, React Native and vanilla JS.

From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.

How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Visible inside customers’ products. Free-tier rooms show a small 'Synced by Slatebase' mark in the canvas share menu and the shared-link page. People opening a customer's board see it. Paid plans remove the mark.
- Do they become customers?
- Viewers are mostly end users of someone else's app, so few will buy. The people who can buy are the developers among them. Test how many click through and start a project.
- First customers
- Small SaaS teams of 2 to 20 engineers adding a shared canvas to a product, such as planning, design review or education tools, who want an open-licensed SDK.
- Where to reach them
- GitHub and SDK communities: Publish a working adapter and example app for open canvas libraries. Answer licence-cost questions in issues and discussions.
- Developer forums: Share a short tutorial on adding live rooms to a React app in an afternoon, and invite readers into the free tier.
- First milestone
- Ten teams run a live room in production, and three pay for the Team plan within 60 days of launch.

RisksAI inference
- TechnicalReliable real-time sync with offline merge is hard to get right. Data loss or slow rooms at scale would end trust quickly.
- CommercialDevelopers who choose a free SDK may also self-host sync. Many may never pay beyond the free tier.
- PlatformDepends on third-party open canvas libraries. Changes to their data format or licence could break adapters.
- CommercialThe demand evidence is one repository's star growth. It does not show that teams will pay for hosting.
- DataHosting customers' user drawings brings privacy, retention and deletion duties that vary by customer and region.
