Desktop app: Infrastructure engineers review cost estimates, budget rules, and agent logs for infrastructure code changes during detailed desk work, not while away from their environment. Sample screens on a computer, in the proposed brand. Their numbers are sample data.

About this appAI proposal
Thriftwire gives AI coding agents a small set of local, deterministic tools: look up a cloud price, estimate the cost of a Terraform or CloudFormation change, and validate the code. The agent checks cost before it writes, not after the bill arrives.
Output is trimmed for agents. Answers come back as short, structured results, so agents do not chain jq, python and wc over long reports, and teams spend fewer tokens re-loading code and policy context.
A web dashboard, installable as a PWA, shows platform teams what their agents proposed, what it would cost and which budget rule applied. Agents are the first caller; humans review the results.

- Why this name
- Thrift means careful spending; wire suggests the line between an agent and its tools. Two plain words joined, easy to say.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Local price lookup
Agents ask for one price and get one answer from a local price snapshot, instead of recalling prices from memory across millions of price points.

Cost estimate for a change
Estimate the monthly cost of a Terraform or CloudFormation diff before it is applied. The same input gives the same result every time.

Agent-sized output
Short structured replies with only the fields an agent needs. Fewer tokens used, and no jq or python pipelines to parse long output.

Budget rules in the loop
Set limits per project or environment. The agent sees the rule, the headroom and a cheaper option before it writes the code.

Verified: Infracost's pricing page lists a free plan, two paid plans from $250 to $1,000 a month, and prices on request for larger customers. These tiers sit below that range as a starting point to test.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Partners and integrations. The tools are listed where coding agents find tools (MCP directories, agent and IDE plugin lists, Terraform communities). Agents call Thriftwire in the workflow, and run logs show reviewers the tool name.
- Do they become customers?
- Developers who install it can become paying team buyers when they need shared budget rules. Test whether individual free users convert to Team, or whether platform leads buy first.
- First customers
- Platform engineering leads at small software companies (20 to 200 engineers) whose developers already use coding agents to change Terraform on AWS.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News: Show HN with a demo of an agent picking a cheaper configuration; the source thread shows interest.
- MCP and agent tool directories: List the free CLI where developers look for tools for their coding agents.
- Terraform communities: Share cost-check examples in forums and Slack groups for infrastructure engineers.
- First milestone
- Five teams on the Team plan within 90 days, each with agents running estimates weekly.
Why people already pay for this

- VerifiedHacker News post received 48 points and 29 comments
- Public claimCoding agents are already calling cost analysis tools and generating infrastructure code in production, creating demand for agent-optimized cost tools.

RisksAI inference
- CommercialInfracost already serves this need and has customers; teams may judge an agent-friendly mode from it good enough. Test whether agent-specific output is reason enough to switch or add a tool.
- DataKeeping accurate, current price snapshots for AWS, Azure and Google is ongoing work; stale or wrong prices would break trust in every estimate.
- TechnicalEstimating usage-based resources (data transfer, requests) from code alone is imprecise, so estimates may differ from real bills.
- PlatformAgent tool standards and coding agents change fast; integrations may need frequent updates, and agent vendors could add cost features themselves.
