About this appAI proposal
Spareframe is a gateway and test bench for teams that put image generation inside a product and watch the bill. You bring your own provider keys, describe a use case such as product thumbnails or blog covers, and compare several image models on your real prompts, side by side, with the cost of each result.
Reviewers mark results pass or fail. Spareframe makes the cheapest model that clears your bar the default for that use case, keeps a stronger model as fallback, and caches repeat requests so you do not pay twice for the same image.
It does not train a model or claim top-tier output. It makes the trade-off visible: good enough, at the lowest price your team can show is acceptable. One API endpoint serves every use case, so switching models needs no code change.

- Why this name
- A spare frame is the one you keep in reserve and don't overspend on. It suggests thrift and a backup model, in two plain words joined.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Side-by-side model bench
Run the same prompts across several image models and see each result next to its cost per image.

Pass/fail quality bar
Reviewers mark results per use case. The bar is a pass rate you set, not a vague score.

Cheapest-passing routing
One endpoint sends each request to the lowest-cost model that meets the bar for that use case.

Automatic fallback
If the cheap model errors or times out, the request goes to the backup model you chose.

PricingAI proposal
The material gives no competitor prices. Tiers are a starting point to test: a flat platform fee, with image costs paid to providers through the customer's own keys.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- No loop in the product. Spareframe runs behind the customer's product through an API, and end users do not see it. It reaches customers through content, such as public cost comparisons from bench runs, and through direct outreach.
- Do they become customers?
- Exposure is not the goal here. Test whether developers who find it through posts and communities will connect keys and pay after seeing savings on their own prompts in the free bench.
- First customers
- Small SaaS teams of 2 to 20 people with an image feature in production, such as thumbnails, covers or avatars, where one developer owns the image API bill.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and developer forums: Post worked examples of the cost versus pass-rate trade-off and invite readers to run the free bench.
- Direct outreach to indie SaaS: Message founders with image features and offer a free bench run on 30 of their real prompts.
- Open-source starter kits: Publish a small example repo showing routing and fallback that links to the hosted version.
- First milestone
- Ten teams run a bench on their own prompts, and five of them connect keys and pay for Team within 60 days.
Why people already pay for this
- Public claimCurrent leading image generation APIs are too expensive to justify use in many production scenarios
- Public claimThere is demand for image generation models optimized for cost over state-of-the-art quality that still meet production requirements
- Public claimLower-cost image generation models are already being used in production when quality is adequate for the specific use-case

RisksAI inference
- CommercialProviders may add their own routing, caching or cheaper tiers, and teams may build a simple fallback script themselves. Spareframe must show savings that exceed its fee.
- PlatformDepends on third-party image APIs whose terms, prices and rate limits change. Some terms may restrict proxying or caching of outputs.
- TechnicalA gateway sits in the request path, so added latency or downtime hurts customers' products. It needs a fast, reliable path and a bypass option.
- AIPass/fail reviews on small samples can mislead: a model may pass on 40 prompts and fail on rare ones. Quality drift after provider updates needs re-tests.
- DataCustomer prompts and generated images may contain sensitive content. Storage, retention and deletion rules need to be clear and enforceable.
