About this appAI proposal
Tidewell is a self-hosted observability platform for DevOps and SRE teams. It takes in logs, traces and metrics over OpenTelemetry and keeps them in S3-compatible buckets you own, so storage cost and data location stay in your hands.
Ask questions in plain language, such as 'why did checkout errors rise after the 14:00 deploy?'. Tidewell turns the question into a query across all three signal types, shows the query it ran, and lets you edit it. You learn the syntax by reading, not before you start.
It is for mid-market and enterprise teams that want to leave per-seat or per-GB platforms without running five separate tools. One install, one place to look, no vendor lock-in.

- Why this name
- A tidewell is a pool that fills and holds water: telemetry flowing into storage you own. Two plain syllables, easy to say.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
One store for logs, traces and metrics
All three signals land in your S3-compatible bucket in open formats, so you can read them with other tools too.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- No loop in the product. Self-hosted installs inside company networks give little outside visibility. Reach comes from content, open-source style docs, and engineers who move between teams and bring it along.
- Do they become customers?
- Readers of docs and posts are engineers who can install and pay. Test whether free installs convert to Team or Business plans within 60 days.
- First customers
- Platform and SRE teams of 5 to 30 engineers at mid-market companies already running OpenTelemetry and paying for a hosted observability tool.
- Where to reach them
- OpenTelemetry community forums: Share migration guides and answer questions on cutting storage cost with S3.
- Hacker News and GitHub: Publish a demo and a cost comparison method with reproducible numbers.
- SRE meetups and Slack groups: Offer free setup help to a few teams in exchange for feedback.
- First milestone
- Five teams run it on production telemetry for 30 days and two sign for a paid plan.

RisksAI inference
- CommercialMonoscope already offers a similar open project, and Grafana has a free plan. Tidewell must be clearly easier to run or cheaper to win switching teams.
- AIGenerated queries can be wrong or slow. Answers must show the query, cap scan cost and be tested on real telemetry before trust.
- TechnicalQuerying large volumes straight from S3 can be slow without careful indexing and caching, which drives build effort.
- DataLogs can hold secrets or personal data. Sending them to a hosted LLM needs redaction or a local model option.
- CommercialSelf-hosted buyers may expect open source and pay only for support, which makes revenue hard to forecast.
