About this appAI proposal
Gutterline is a browser-based studio for technical writers, developers and book authors. You write chapters in a simple markup with code listings, maths and figures, and it builds a typeset PDF with running heads, numbered figures, cross-references and an index.
Layout is checked in repeated passes, so a figure that moves a page break, or a reference that changes a page number, is settled before you see the result. A layout panel lists what is still unsettled, such as a lone line at the top of a page or a listing split across pages.
You do not need Pandoc, a LaTeX install or a build script. Projects are installable as a PWA, work offline for editing, and compile in the cloud when you ask for a proof. Small scripts in the markup generate tables, repeated sections and code output.

- Why this name
- The gutter is the inner margin where two pages meet, and the guide line that holds a layout together. It names the craft without naming any tool.

One plain markup for prose, code and maths
Write headings, listings, equations and figures in one syntax. No separate Markdown, converter and LaTeX layers to learn.

Multi-pass layout
References, page numbers and floats are resolved until the layout stops changing, so contents and cross-references match the final pages.

Layout issues panel
See widows, split code listings, overfull lines and unplaced figures as a list. Click one to jump to the page and fix it.

Scripting inside the document
Use small functions and loops to build tables, repeat patterns and pull in code output, so examples in the book stay current.

PricingAI proposal
Typst's pricing page (verified) lists a free plan, one paid plan at $7.99 a month, and prices on request for larger customers. These tiers follow that shape and sit just below it as a starting point to test.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Shared outputs. Authors share proof PDFs and read-only web previews with reviewers and editors. Free-tier proofs carry a small colophon line with a link, and public book pages can show the template used.
- Do they become customers?
- Reviewers are often authors or writers themselves and may open a project of their own, but many only read a PDF once. Test how many reviewers who open a link start a project within 30 days.
- First customers
- Developers writing a self-published technical book or course manual, working alone or in a team of two to three, who now use Markdown, Pandoc and LaTeX together.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and developer forums: Post a worked example: one real technical book chapter built in the tool, with source and layout issues shown.
- Technical writing communities: Offer free template packs and run a few hands-on sessions for writers moving off Pandoc and LaTeX pipelines.
- Self-publishing author groups: Recruit a small group of authors with books in progress and help them ship a print-ready PDF.
- First milestone
- Ten authors each ship a full book proof, and at least five pay for the Author plan within 60 days.
Why people already pay for this
- Public claimText layout requires iterative passes and evaluation models to handle layout constraints that affect other document parts
- Public claimModern languages and faster performance are valued in document preparation tools
- Public claimTechnical writers are switching from traditional Pandoc/Markdown/LaTeX pipelines to modern alternatives for book projects
- VerifiedTypst's pricing page lists 1 paid plan, at $7.99 a month, plus a free plan and prices on request for larger customers

RisksAI inference
- CommercialTypst already offers a free plan and a $7.99 plan with a similar promise. Gutterline must be clearly better for books, or authors will not switch.
- TechnicalMulti-pass layout, hyphenation, fonts and maths are hard to get right. A first version may produce pages that publishers reject.
- Intellectual propertyBuilding on an existing open-source engine needs a licence check, and the markup must not copy another language's syntax or name.
- CommercialAuthors may be happy with free tools and unwilling to pay. The material gives no evidence of willingness to pay for books specifically.
- PlatformBrowser memory and offline storage limits on phones may restrict large projects. Heavy work stays in the cloud, which adds cost.
