About this appAI proposal
Skylane Check takes a start point, an end point and your aircraft, and returns one verdict: clear, marginal or blocked. Each verdict lists the rules, zones, wind and battery figures behind it, so you can see why a route passes or fails.
It is built for commercial drone operators, delivery teams and developers of route planning software. Instead of checking federal, state and local rules, stadium hours, building heights and forecasts by hand, you run one check and keep the result as a record.
The verdict is not fixed. When wind changes or a restriction starts, the route is rechecked and you are told. Developers can call the same check from their own planner through an API.

- Why this name
- A skylane is a path through air, and Check says the one job: a verdict on that path. Two plain words, easy to say.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
One verdict per route
Enter two points and an aircraft. Get clear, marginal or blocked, with every reason listed and linked to its rule or data source.

Layered rule check
Federal, state and county rules are checked together for the airspace the path crosses, including time limits like stadium game hours.

Wind-aware battery model
Estimates energy use from aircraft specs, payload and forecast wind, and shows the reserve left at landing or the shortfall.
No member yet
Building clearance
Compares the path and altitude with building heights along the route and flags the segments that fail.

What it could be worthEstimate
What a software business making this much sells for today, from real deals. Pick a monthly revenue.
If it makes
Worth about
$194,000
Sale range $132,000 to $263,000
$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Shared outputs. Operators share a check report link with clients, insurers or regulators as proof a route was checked. The report shows the product name and the date of the data used.
- Do they become customers?
- Recipients are often other operators or logistics staff who could run their own checks, but many only view once. Test how many report views lead to a signup.
- First customers
- Small commercial drone operators and delivery pilots in one US region, running 5 to 20 aircraft on repeat delivery or inspection routes.
- Where to reach them
- Drone operator forums: Post worked examples of routes that flip with wind or stadium hours in operator communities and ask for test routes.
- Route planning developers: Offer the API free to teams building drone planners, and ask for feedback on the verdict format.
- Hacker News follow-up: Reply to the source thread with a working demo and invite commenters to try their own routes.
- First milestone
- Five paying operators in one region who run saved routes weekly, and two developers calling the API.
Why people already pay for this
- VerifiedHacker News post received 17 points and 2 comments
- Public claimDrone route legality depends on multiple overlapping regulations at federal, state, and county levels, plus dynamic factors like wind and weather.
- Public claimThe same drone route can become illegal if wind conditions change, making real-time validation necessary.
- Public claimA specific example shows a 5.1 km delivery route becomes infeasible if wind increases from 7 mph to 11 mph, requiring battery usage to exceed 100%.

RisksAI inference
- RegulatoryA wrong clear verdict could lead to an illegal flight. The product must state it is decision support, not legal advice, and show the source and date of every rule.
- DataLocal ordinances and temporary restrictions are fragmented and hard to keep complete. Coverage may have to start in one region.
- TechnicalBattery models differ by aircraft and payload. Estimates without real flight data may be too rough to trust near the margin.
- CommercialEvidence is a single Hacker News post with 17 points and 2 comments. Willingness to pay is not shown.
- PlatformData licences for airspace, weather and buildings may limit redistribution or API resale and raise costs.
