About this appAI proposal
Quiet Slate is a web app for laying out small, glanceable dashboards from your Home Assistant data and sending them to e-ink screens around your home. You pick the entities, arrange tiles, and preview the result in black, white and grey at your panel's size.
It is for Home Assistant users with large setups who keep their data in phone and tablet dashboards and want it on a wall, a shelf or a hallway door. It works with low-cost, battery-powered panels, so the screen does not have to be expensive.
Each panel wakes on a schedule, fetches its image and sleeps again to save battery. Layouts export as plain files, so you are not locked in. Selling hardware is not part of this proposal; the software is.

- Why this name
- A slate is a simple writing surface, and quiet describes e-ink: no glow, no noise, always on. Two plain words, easy to say.

PricingAI proposal
The material gives no prices, only that Trmnl is seen as too expensive for most Home Assistant users. These tiers are a starting point to test, with a free tier so cost stays low.

From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.

How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- No loop in the product. Layouts can be shared as files or template links in Home Assistant forums, but the screens themselves show no brand to visitors. Growth would come from content, templates and community posts.
- Do they become customers?
- Template viewers are other Home Assistant users who could become customers. Test whether shared templates lead to sign-ups, and whether free users upgrade past one panel.
- First customers
- Home Assistant users with 100+ entities who already own or plan to buy a low-cost e-ink panel and want several room screens.
- Where to reach them
- Home Assistant forums: Post a free layout editor demo with templates for energy, climate and garage panels.
- Hacker News and Reddit: Share a build log of a multi-room e-ink setup, with the editor linked.
- E-ink DIY communities: Offer panel profiles and ask owners of common panels to test them.
- First milestone
- Twenty free users with 2+ panels each and five paying for the Home tier within two months.
Why people already pay for this
- Public claimHome Assistant users typically track over 400 individual devices and sensors with data visualized in several dashboards, but rarely display this data on physical screens in their spaces.
- Public claimUsers need small-sized screens, long-lasting batteries, and cheap, customizable display hardware for home spaces.
- Public claimExisting e-ink display solutions like Trmnl are perceived as too expensive for most Home Assistant users.
- Public claimHome automation data primarily remains accessible through phones and tablets rather than physical displays in living spaces.

RisksAI inference
- CommercialThe material says users want cheap hardware. A software-only product may not solve the cost problem, and buyers may expect a ready-to-use screen.
- TechnicalPanels differ in size, colour depth and firmware. Supporting many models, and reading data without opening a user's home network, may take more work than expected.
- PlatformHome Assistant or existing e-ink makers could add a similar editor, and free community projects may satisfy users who like to tinker.
- CommercialMany Home Assistant users prefer self-hosting and free tools, so willingness to pay a subscription is unproven.
