About this appAI proposal
Shelfmail connects to your email accounts over IMAP, copies every message and attachment into compressed storage you choose, and gives you a fast search page to find anything again. Your mail stays on your own server, disk or bucket.
It is built for technical users, small teams and organisations that keep mail for retention or compliance, or want to stop paying for mailbox storage. Once mail is safely archived, rules can clear old messages from the live mailbox.
Unlike a plain backup script, it offers a browsable web interface, full-text search across accounts and a log of what was archived and when. Unlike a hosted archiving service, the data never has to leave infrastructure you pick.

- Why this name
- A shelf is a place you own where things are kept in order and easy to reach. Shelfmail says that in two plain words.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
IMAP connection to any mailbox
Add accounts with an app password or OAuth where the provider allows it. Folders sync incrementally, so each run fetches only new mail.

Compressed, deduplicated storage
Messages and attachments are compressed and stored once, on local disk or an S3-compatible bucket you choose.

Full-text search
Search subject, body, sender, dates and attachment text across every account, with filters you can save.

What it could be worthEstimate
What a software business making this much sells for today, from real deals. Pick a monthly revenue.

Worth about
$194,000
Sale range $132,000 to $263,000
$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- No loop in the product. Shelfmail is a private tool for personal and company mail, so it has no built-in sharing loop. Customers come from open-source communities, self-hosting forums and content about email retention.
- Do they become customers?
- The people reached are the buyers: admins and technical users who choose and pay. What needs testing is whether free self-hosters upgrade to Pro or Team, and whether managed hosting sells.
- First customers
- Small companies of 5 to 30 people with one technical admin who must keep email for compliance, plus privacy-minded self-hosters.
- Where to reach them
- Self-hosting communities: Share a free self-host build and setup guide in self-hosting forums and subreddits, then offer Pro to those who ask.
- GitHub: Publish the core with a clear readme and demo. The verified repository interest shows demand for this type of tool.
- Compliance content: Write guides on email retention and GDPR basics for small teams and link to a managed trial.
- First milestone
- Ten small teams on the paid plan within 90 days, with at least three using managed hosting.
Why people already pay for this

RisksAI inference
- TechnicalIMAP servers differ in quirks, rate limits and folder handling. Reliable incremental sync across providers will take testing.
- PlatformLarge email providers may restrict IMAP or require OAuth app review, which could block some users.
- CommercialSelf-hosting users may expect free software, so paid conversion is untested. Managed hosting must justify its price.
- RegulatoryStoring mail for others in a managed tier brings GDPR duties as a processor. Compliance claims need legal review.
- DataArchived mail is sensitive. A bug or breach in a managed version would be very costly, so encryption is essential.
