About this appAI proposal
Tollgate Keys is a managed gateway between your applications and the AI providers you use. Teams get their own keys, budgets and limits, while provider credentials stay in one place. Every request is metered as it happens, so usage and cost are visible per team, project or customer.
It is built for enterprise software teams that run AI services internally or resell them to customers. Plans, quotas and invoices sit next to the gateway, so billing does not depend on spreadsheets or side scripts.
Unlike simple relay tools, it is designed around billing accuracy, subscription plans and running in more than one region, so a single regional outage does not stop your AI features.

- Why this name
- A tollgate counts and charges each passage; keys are how teams get through. Two plain words that say what the product does.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Unified provider access
Route requests to several AI providers through one endpoint. Provider credentials are stored once and never handed to teams.

Per-key budgets and limits
Set spend caps, request limits and model allow-lists on each team, project or customer key.

Real-time usage metering
See tokens, requests and cost as they accrue, broken down by key, model and team.

Subscription plans
Define plans with included volume and overage rates, then assign them to internal teams or paying customers.

What it could be worthEstimate
What a software business making this much sells for today, from real deals. Pick a monthly revenue.
If it makes
Worth about
$194,000
Sale range $132,000 to $263,000
$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- No loop in the product. Customers use the gateway behind their own products, so end users do not see it. Growth comes from content, open-source community presence and direct sales to teams already running a gateway.
- Do they become customers?
- Exposure is minimal, so acquisition must be earned. Test whether teams running self-hosted gateways will pay for billing and multi-region.
- First customers
- Platform teams at mid-size software companies that resell AI features to their own customers and bill by usage today with scripts.
- Where to reach them
- Open-source gateway communities: Join issue threads and discussions where users ask about billing and multi-region, and offer a migration guide.
- Technical content: Publish guides on metering AI costs per customer and on failover across regions.
- Direct outreach: Contact platform leads at software companies that advertise AI features, offering a pilot.
- First milestone
- Five paying teams on Team or Business plans, each billing at least one downstream customer through the gateway.
Why people already pay for this
- VerifiedGitHub repository gained 975 stars in 79 days
- Public claimEnterprise organizations need AI API gateways with billing, subscription, and multi-region capabilities distinct from simpler relay systems
- Public claimThere is established demand for AI API gateway solutions, with existing open-source and commercial products serving different market segments
- EstimateOpenRouter: $160M annualized revenue (Aug 2026), up from $50M end of 2025 (Aug 2026)

RisksAI inference
- TechnicalAccurate metering across regions during failover is hard; double counts or gaps would break trust in invoices.
- CommercialOpen-source gateways already exist and are free; buyers may self-host unless billing and multi-region are clearly worth paying for.
- PlatformAI providers can change token reporting, pricing or terms on reselling access, which would force rework.
- RegulatoryEnterprises may require data residency, SOC-style audits and review of prompt data passing through the gateway.
- DataProxying prompts and responses makes the product a sensitive data path; logging choices and retention need care.
