About this appAI proposal
Rackhand is a workspace for IT teams moving off VMware onto open-source hypervisors such as Proxmox. It turns the missing enterprise layer into something your own team can use: a migration planner, runbooks for day-to-day work, a support case log and a training tracker.
You list your VMs and hosts, group them into waves, and get a cutover checklist for each. After the move, the same workspace holds on-call runbooks, change records, escalation contacts and who on the team has been trained on what.
It does not replace a support contract. It keeps the knowledge in one place, so a small team can run a hypervisor without a vendor-sized department, and can show management the plan and the status.

- Why this name
- A rack hand is the person who helps in the server room. The name suggests steady, hands-on help for teams without a big vendor behind them.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Migration waves
Import a VM inventory from CSV, group machines into waves, and set order, owner and cutover window for each.

Cutover checklists
Each VM gets a checklist for backup, network, licensing, test and rollback. Windows Server guests get extra licensing steps.

Runbook library
Starter runbooks for common cluster tasks such as node loss, storage full and failed backup, which your team edits to fit.

Support case log
Record every incident, who handled it, the fix and the time taken. Export the log for a vendor or partner.

What it could be worthEstimate
What a software business making this much sells for today, from real deals. Pick a monthly revenue.

Worth about
$194,000
Sale range $132,000 to $263,000
$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Shared outputs. Teams send read-only migration reports and runbook links to finance, leadership, auditors and outside support partners. Each page carries the product name and a link to start a plan.
- Do they become customers?
- Readers are often managers who sign off on budgets, so some could buy. Many will only view a link once. Test how many report viewers start their own plan.
- First customers
- IT managers at mid-sized companies, roughly 50 to 500 staff, with an on-premises VMware cluster facing renewal and one or two admins who would run Proxmox.
- Where to reach them
- Proxmox and sysadmin forums: Share a free migration checklist and cost worksheet in community threads about leaving VMware, linking to the Starter tier.
- Managed service providers: Offer MSPs that do Proxmox migrations a shared workspace to run client waves and send client reports.
- Direct outreach: Contact IT managers who post about VMware renewals with an offer of a free migration plan review.
- First milestone
- Five teams in one segment use a plan to migrate real VMs, and at least three pay for the Team tier within 60 days.
Why people already pay for this
- Public claimBroadcom raised VMware prices and clients are seeking alternatives to avoid these increases.
- Public claimProxmox is significantly cheaper than VMware and Nutanix but enterprise support is the main barrier preventing adoption.
- Public claimNutanix is a viable VMware alternative but costs almost as much due to bundled features.
- Public claimMigration costs and IT retraining are significant factors keeping some clients on VMware despite price increases.

RisksAI inference
- CommercialThe evidence says the barrier is enterprise support. A software workspace may not satisfy buyers who want a vendor on the hook with response times. Test whether teams pay for tooling without a service contract.
- CommercialThe Hacker News claims are public claims, not verified. Demand from firms leaving VMware needs checking with real buyers before building more.
- TechnicalWithout a live link to clusters, inventory and status are entered or imported by hand. That may feel thin compared with tools that connect directly to the hypervisor.
- DataRunbooks and inventories describe internal infrastructure. Enterprise buyers will ask about data handling, access control and where the data is stored.
- PlatformThe starter runbooks depend on Proxmox behaviour that changes between releases, so they need ongoing review to stay correct.
