About this appAI proposal
Openlatch gives engineering teams one API and one hosted web flow for identity checks: document capture, liveness, AML screening and age or attribute checks. You build one integration instead of stitching several providers together by hand.
It is made for startups and scale-ups in regulated or consumer products. You get a working sandbox in minutes, a public price list, and no sales call. The capture flow runs in the browser as a web app and is built to stay usable on mid-range and older phones.
Openlatch routes each check to the right underlying provider for the country and document, and shows the whole decision trail in one console. Teams can ask for just the fact they need, such as over 18, and avoid storing a full ID.

- Why this name
- A latch is a simple thing that opens for the right person. Open suggests open pricing and an open sandbox. Two plain words, easy to say.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Instant sandbox
Sign up and get test keys and a working flow at once. Simulate pass, fail and review outcomes before you talk to anyone.

One API for the whole flow
Document check, liveness, AML screening and database lookups run through one request and one result format.

Attribute-only checks
Ask for a yes or no, such as over 18 or resident in a country. Raw document images can be discarded right after the check.

Built for mid-range phones
A light web capture flow with low-bandwidth mode, retry hints and clear fallback steps when a camera or chip read fails.

PricingAI proposal
The material gives no competitor prices, only that legacy vendors hide them and require large annual commits. These tiers are a starting point to test. Per-check fees would be listed publicly.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Visible inside customers’ products. The hosted verification flow runs inside customers' apps and shows a small 'Verified with Openlatch' line and a link to the privacy page. End users see it each time they verify.
- Do they become customers?
- Most end users are consumers, not buyers. Only the engineers and product staff who see the badge or the public price list are likely to convert. Test whether the badge link produces any sandbox signups.
- First customers
- Engineering leads at seed to Series B fintech and age-restricted marketplace startups in the US and EU, with 5 to 50 staff, who are about to add KYC.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and dev forums: Post a teardown of the fragmented provider stack with the public price list and a link to the instant sandbox.
- Founder communities: Offer a free migration of one existing flow to startup founders in fintech and marketplace groups.
- Technical content: Publish guides on KYC for older Android phones and on attribute-only age checks, each with a working sample.
- First milestone
- Ten teams reach a live flow and five of them pay for the Launch tier within 90 days, all in the fintech or age-gated vertical.
Why people already pay for this
- VerifiedHacker News post received 77 points and 66 comments
- Public claimEngineering teams must integrate multiple separate providers to handle different identity verification needs across geographies, and manual orchestration of these providers is complex and fragile
- AI inferenceExisting enterprise identity solutions have poor developer experience and high barriers to entry
- AI inferenceLegacy identity verification tools perform poorly on mid-range and older Android devices, resulting in user drop-off and undetected fraud

RisksAI inference
- CommercialThe evidence says vertical integration beats orchestration-only tools. A router over third-party vendors may be seen as the same fragile stitching and may have thin margins.
- RegulatoryHandling ID documents and biometrics falls under GDPR, CCPA and local KYC rules. Customers may need licences, data processing agreements and regional hosting before they can buy.
- TechnicalBrowser camera access, NFC chip reading and liveness on older Android phones are limited in a PWA. Accuracy claims need real device testing.
- PlatformVendor terms, price changes or outages could break the pricing and the routing. Resale may need approval.
- AIDeepfake and spoofing attacks change fast. A weak liveness result harms customers and the reputation of the product.
