About this appAI proposal
Finish Line is a read-later app built around one idea: the queue should shrink. Save articles from any browser or phone. When you finish one, it leaves your queue and moves to a searchable archive. You end the day with a short list, not a growing pile.
It is for people who collect articles across a Mac, a Linux laptop and an iPhone and are tired of tending a list. Save with an extension, bookmarklet, iOS shortcut or drag and drop. Subscribe to RSS feeds, and send any article to an AI tool for a summary before you decide to read it.
Per the material, existing read-later apps give you a list that only grows. Safari's Reading List drops items after reading but works only on Apple devices. Finish Line brings that finish-and-clear model to every platform.

- Why this name
- A finish line is where you stop. It names the promise: your reading list has an end, and you can reach it.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Read it, it leaves
Finishing an article removes it from the queue and files it in the archive. No manual cleanup, no list to groom.

What it could be worthEstimate
What a software business making this much sells for today, from real deals. Pick a monthly revenue.

Worth about
$194,000
Sale range $132,000 to $263,000
$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- No loop in the product. Finish Line is a personal tool. It spreads through content, community posts and word of mouth, not through its own use. An optional shared reading list link is possible later but is not the main loop.
- Do they become customers?
- Reach comes from Hacker News and read-later switcher searches. Test whether people leaving Pocket and similar apps sign up and convert from free to paid within 30 days.
- First customers
- Software engineers and researchers who read many articles weekly across a Mac or Linux laptop and an iPhone, and recently left Pocket or are unhappy with another read-later app.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News: Post a Show HN about the finish-and-clear model and answer comments from people discussing read-later apps.
- Pocket alternative searches: Publish a short import guide and comparison page for people looking to replace Pocket.
- Productivity communities: Share the inbox-zero for reading idea in forums and newsletters that cover personal knowledge tools.
- First milestone
- Fifty weekly active users from the Hacker News post, and ten of them paying for Plus within 60 days.
Why people already pay for this
- VerifiedHacker News post received 24 points and 17 comments
- Public claimUsers struggle with accumulating open tabs and reading lists across multiple browsers and devices that clutter their workflow.
- Public claimExisting read-later apps like Pocket, Instapaper, Raindrop, and Matter only provide growing lists that users must maintain, not a completion-driven model.
- AI inferenceSafari has an inbox-zero reading model but is limited to Apple devices and has incomplete implementation.

RisksAI inference
- CommercialRead-later is crowded and many users may be fine with existing apps. The finish-and-clear model must prove it is enough to make people switch and pay.
- TechnicalDetecting that an article is read is imprecise. Scroll or time signals can be wrong, so users need an easy manual mark and undo.
- PlatformiOS PWAs have limited share-sheet support. Saving from iPhone relies on a shortcut, which may feel clunky compared with native apps.
- Intellectual propertyStoring full article text and Internet Archive copies may raise copyright or terms-of-use questions for publishers.
- AIAI summaries can be wrong or omit key points, and per-use model costs may squeeze margins on the paid tier.
