ScreensConcept
Desktop and mobile: Infrastructure setup and state review happen on desktops, but approvals for apply runs must happen on mobile for on-call responders to authorize changes from anywhere. Sample screens on a computer and a phone, in the proposed brand. Their numbers are sample data.

About this appAI proposal
Plainstate stores your infrastructure-as-code state, runs plans and applies, and asks for approval before anything changes. It is built for mid-market infrastructure and DevOps teams who manage cloud resources as code and want a bill they can predict.
Pricing follows team size, never the number of resources you manage. Adding a thousand resources does not change your invoice. State stays in a plain, documented format and can be exported at any time, so a licence or pricing change cannot trap you.
It works with open-source IaC tools and your own cloud accounts. The phone-friendly app lets an on-call engineer review a plan, approve an apply or lock state from anywhere.

- Why this name
- Plain says what you get: no tricks in pricing or licensing. State is the core thing teams hand to a vendor, so the name pairs the two.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Remote state with locking
Encrypted state storage, versioned history and locking so two people never apply at once.

Plan and apply runs
Start runs from a pull request or a button. Logs stream live and every run is kept for review.

Approval gates
Require one or two approvers before an apply. Approve from your phone with the plan diff in front of you.

Flat pricing by team
Price is set by team size. No per-resource meter, so growth in your cloud estate does not raise the bill.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Users invite others. Engineers invite teammates and approvers into workspaces, and pull request comments link reviewers to the run page. Each invited approver sees the product in daily use.
- Do they become customers?
- Invited teammates already work at a paying team, so they add seats rather than new accounts. Whether engineers carry it to their next employer or other teams would have to be tested.
- First customers
- Platform teams of 3 to 15 engineers at companies with 50 to 500 staff, currently on a vendor-hosted IaC platform and facing a pricing or licence change.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and DevOps forums: Join price-change threads with a migration guide and a cost comparison tool, then offer free migration help.
- Direct outreach to platform leads: Message platform and DevOps leads who have posted about pricing changes, offering a free state import.
- Open-source community: Publish a state export and import tool, then link to Plainstate for managed runs.
- First milestone
- Five teams of 3 to 15 engineers move live workspaces and pay for Team or Organization within 90 days.
Why people already pay for this
- Public claimHashiCorp's Terraform Cloud implemented a resource-based pricing model that resulted in a 100x price increase for some teams.
- Public claimHashiCorp's own account managers acknowledged that mid-market teams should consider migrating away.
- Public claimHashiCorp changed its licensing model to non-open-source licenses.

RisksAI inference
- TechnicalRunning customers' code against their cloud accounts needs strong sandboxing and credential handling. A breach of state or credentials would end trust.
- CommercialFlat pricing may attract the heaviest users and squeeze margins. Limits per seat and workspace need testing against real usage.
- PlatformCompatibility depends on the open-source IaC tools and provider plugins staying permissively licensed and stable.
- CommercialTeams may prefer self-hosting free tools over paying. The managed value must be clear: approvals, drift checks and phone review.
- RegulatoryMid-market buyers may ask for security attestations before storing state, which takes time and money a small team must plan for.
