About this appAI proposal
Spendlane reads your exported LLM API logs offline and groups calls by task type. It shows what each group costs and points to the groups where a cheaper model may do the job. You see cost per task type instead of one monthly total.
Before anything changes in production, you replay a sample of real calls against candidate models and compare answers side by side. You set the quality bar, review the differences, and only then decide which traffic to move.
It is for developers and small teams that spend heavily on LLM APIs and have no time to dig through logs by hand. Savings are estimates until your own test confirms them.

- Why this name
- Spend is the problem, lane is the route each call takes. Two plain English words joined into one easy name.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Cost by task type
Upload logs and see spend grouped by task type, prompt template and model, so you know where the budget goes.

Cheaper-model candidates
Each task group gets a ranked list of lower-cost models with an estimated saving based on your own token counts.

Side-by-side replay
Replay a sample of real calls on candidate models and compare outputs next to the original answers.

Your own quality bar
Mark answers acceptable or not, or add a simple check. Only groups that pass your bar are marked safe to switch.

What it could be worthEstimate
What a software business making this much sells for today, from real deals. Pick a monthly revenue.
If it makes
Worth about
$194,000
Sale range $132,000 to $263,000
$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Shared outputs. Users send read-only savings reports with findings and test results to leads, finance or clients. Each report carries the product name and a link to run the same analysis.
- Do they become customers?
- Report readers are often budget owners or engineers who could become buyers, but a one-time viewer may not. Test how many report views lead to a log import.
- First customers
- Small software teams of 2 to 15 engineers with a monthly LLM API bill that has become a visible budget line, starting with those running autonomous agent or coding workloads.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and developer forums: Post a free log-analysis walkthrough and invite readers of cost threads to try it on their own export.
- Open-source gateway communities: Offer a log converter for gateway exports and answer cost questions in their discussion channels.
- Direct outreach to AI startups: Message engineering leads with a short example report built from a sample log.
- First milestone
- Ten teams import real logs and three pay for Pro after a replay test confirms a saving.
Why people already pay for this
- VerifiedHacker News post received 67 points and 24 comments
- Public claimTeams using LLMs experience rapidly growing token costs that exceed planned budgets before the week ends.
- Public claimWithout optimization, teams would need to double their LLM API spending to maintain usage levels.
- Public claimA significant portion of LLM spend goes to simple, low-complexity tasks that could use cheaper models.

RisksAI inference
- AITask-type grouping and quality judgments may be wrong. A cheaper model that passes a small sample may fail on rare inputs, so the tool must show sample size and uncertainty.
- DataLogs often contain customer data. Teams may refuse to upload them, so offline or in-browser analysis must work from day one.
- CommercialGateways such as LiteLLM and model providers could add similar cost views for free. The cost of replay tests is also paid by the user.
- TechnicalLog formats vary by provider and gateway, and the model price registry needs constant upkeep to keep estimates correct.
