About this appAI proposal
Tierwise sits between your coding agents and your model provider. For each request it picks the smallest model and lowest reasoning depth that should handle the task, then sends the call there. Simple edits, renames and test fixes stop running on top-tier settings.
It is built for engineering teams whose agents run all day and whose API bill keeps climbing. You set a budget and a quality bar. Tierwise shows every routing decision, what it saved, and which tasks were escalated, so you can trust it or override it.
Unlike a black-box optimizer, Tierwise starts in shadow mode: it recommends a route for each request without changing anything and reports the estimated savings. You switch to live routing per project when the numbers convince you.

- Why this name
- Tier points to model tiers and reasoning depth; wise suggests choosing the right one. Two plain words joined, easy to say and spell.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Task-aware routing
A fast classifier scores each request and picks the cheapest model and reasoning depth likely to solve it.

Shadow mode first
Run recommendations alongside your current setup and see estimated savings before any call is rerouted.
No member yet
Automatic escalation
If a cheap attempt fails a check, such as a failing test, Tierwise retries on a stronger tier.

Token trimming
Removes repeated context and oversized tool output from prompts before they are sent.

From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Partners and integrations. Offer setup as a drop-in endpoint or plugin for popular coding agents and their config guides, so teams find Tierwise where they set up their API keys.
- Do they become customers?
- Developers who install it are the buyers, so they can convert. Test whether free shadow-mode reports lead to paid live routing within 30 days.
- First customers
- Startups of 5 to 30 engineers running Claude or Codex coding agents daily, with a monthly API bill their lead engineer or CTO already tracks.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News: Share a Show HN with a real shadow-mode savings report from a sample repo and answer technical questions.
- Direct outreach to eng leads: Message CTOs of small AI-heavy startups offering a free week of shadow mode and a written savings estimate.
- First milestone
- Five teams run shadow mode, and at least three switch to paid live routing within 60 days.
Why people already pay for this
- AI inferenceEngineering teams using AI coding agents experience high daily API bills that create pressure to optimize spending
- VerifiedHacker News post received 27 points and 10 comments
- AI inferenceTeams are using top-tier reasoning models and maximum intelligence settings for all tasks, including those that don't require it
- Public claimToken optimization and intelligent routing can achieve 3x cost savings while maintaining quality and improving speed

RisksAI inference
- AIA misrouted hard task gives a worse result or extra retries, which can erase savings and lose trust. Quality checks and escalation rules need real testing.
- CommercialAn existing tool already offers routing with claimed 3x savings. Tierwise must win on transparency and shadow mode, which needs testing with buyers.
- PlatformModel providers could add their own routing or change API terms, reducing the need for a third-party layer.
- DataProxying prompts means handling source code. Teams may refuse without clear no-retention options and security answers.
- TechnicalAdded proxy latency or downtime sits in the path of every agent call and could slow teams down.
