About this appAI proposal
Plainrow is an API for turning user questions into SQL. You send a question and your schema. It rates how hard the query is, picks a model that fits, writes the SQL, checks it, and returns it with a cost and a confidence note.
It is for engineers building apps, agents and integrations that let people ask questions of a database. Teams in the material pick between a cheaper model that may fail on complex queries and a capable one that costs too much. Plainrow sets that choice per query, not per project.
You keep control. Set a price ceiling per question, mark tables as off limits, and see in a console (installable as a PWA) which questions were routed where and which failed. SQL is parsed and checked as read-only before it reaches you.

- Why this name
- Plain language going into rows of a table. Short, easy to say, and it points at the cost-aware, no-fuss approach.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Difficulty-based routing
Each question is scored for joins, nesting and aggregation. Simple ones go to a low-cost model, hard ones to a stronger one.

Per-query price ceiling
Set a maximum cost per question or per month. Plainrow picks the best model within it and tells you when a hard query was capped.

Schema memory
Upload your schema once with column notes and example joins. Prompts stay short, so every call costs less.

Read-only SQL check
Output is parsed against your dialect. Writes, blocked tables and unknown columns are rejected before you see the query.

PricingAI proposal
The material gives no competitor prices. These tiers are a starting point to test; they should be set against real model costs and measured per-query margin before launch.

From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.

- AI2sql.ioEstimate$4,000 a month, worth about $78,000 at that multiple · getlatka.com
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Partners and integrations. Publish a ready tool definition and SDK for popular agent frameworks and no-code automation tools, plus example repos for common database setups. Developers find Plainrow while adding a database question tool.
- Do they become customers?
- Those reached are developers who can sign up and pay, but only if the tool is the one they pick. Test whether framework listings and example repos produce free signups, and how many move to a paid plan.
- First customers
- Small teams of 2 to 10 engineers at B2B SaaS companies adding an ask-your-data feature or agent tool on a Postgres database.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and dev forums: Share a public benchmark of cost versus pass rate on a sample schema, and join threads on NL-to-SQL cost.
- Agent framework communities: Post a working database question tool with example code in framework Discords and repos.
- Direct outreach: Contact teams with public ask-your-data features and offer a free test-set run on their schema.
- First milestone
- Ten teams run their own test sets, and five pay for Build within 60 days, with a measured cost cut at equal pass rate.
Why people already pay for this
- Public claimOrganizations integrate language models via API into their applications and agents for natural language to SQL translation
- Public claimTeams are actively using Terra 5.6 for question to SQL translation
- Public claimCost and capability are key decision factors when selecting between competing solutions
- Public claimCheaper models lack the ability to handle complex SQL queries effectively
- Public claimMore capable models are priced too high for some use cases

RisksAI inference
- CommercialPlainrow resells model calls, so its margin depends on provider prices, which can drop or change. A model maker could add its own cheaper SQL tier and remove the gap.
- AIThe difficulty scorer may misroute: sending hard queries to a weak model gives wrong SQL that looks right. Needs benchmarks on real schemas before any accuracy claim.
- DataCustomers send schemas and sometimes sample values to a third party. Some will refuse, so a no-data mode and clear retention terms are needed.
- TechnicalDialect differences (Postgres, MySQL, BigQuery, others) multiply parser and test work. The first version must support one or two.
- CommercialThe material is only public comments on one forum. Demand for a separate NL-to-SQL API, versus using one model directly, is unproven.
