About this appAI proposal
Lagline shows where time is lost when you chain speech-to-text, an LLM and text-to-speech on a Mac. A small logger in your app sends stage timings to a web dashboard. You see each stage on one timeline, with the gaps between them, so you can tell model time from framework overhead.
It is built for developers shipping voice and multimodal apps on Apple Silicon. Set a latency budget for a whole turn, and Lagline shows which stage breaks it, by how much, and on which machine.
Lagline does not run models. It works with the runtimes you use now, such as llama.cpp, MLX, Ollama or sherpa-onnx, and gives you numbers to decide whether to tune, swap an engine, or fall back to the cloud.

- Why this name
- Lag is the problem developers feel; a line is the timeline they read. Two plain words joined, easy to say and spell.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Turn timeline
One waterfall per request: speech-to-text, LLM first token, decode, text-to-speech. Idle gaps between stages are shown as their own bars.

Latency budget
Set a target for a full voice turn, such as 800 ms. Each stage gets a share and turns red when it goes over.

Runtime comparison
Run the same prompt set through two runtimes or builds and compare stage by stage with percentiles.

Chip and memory tags
Every trace carries chip, RAM and OS tags, so slow runs on base machines do not hide behind fast ones.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Shared outputs. Developers send report links to teammates, open-source maintainers and forum threads to show where latency comes from. Each read-only report carries the Lagline name and a way to try it.
- Do they become customers?
- Viewers are other developers with the same problem, so some may sign up. Test the share of report views that lead to a free account and then to a paid one.
- First customers
- Small teams of 2 to 10 developers building voice assistant or dictation apps for Mac and iPhone, who now chain local speech and LLM runtimes.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and forums: Post public latency breakdowns of common local voice pipelines, made with Lagline, with report links.
- Open-source repos: Offer the logger to maintainers of local speech and LLM projects and ask for benchmark contributions.
- Developer communities: Join Discord and Slack groups for on-device AI and answer latency questions with traces.
- First milestone
- Fifty developers log real traces, and five pay for Solo or Team within 60 days of launch.
Why people already pay for this
- VerifiedHacker News post received 240 points and 153 comments
- Public claimDevelopers shipping on-device AI face severe latency issues when chaining multiple models sequentially, causing many teams to abandon local inference for cloud APIs despite the trade-offs.
- Public claimLatency compounds across sequential model stages, with each 200ms addition becoming unacceptable in voice pipelines.
- Public claimExisting inference engines add overhead through graph schedulers, runtime dispatchers, and memory managers that slow down inference.

RisksAI inference
- CommercialRuntime makers or existing observability tools may add voice-pipeline timelines, and teams may judge a free profiler good enough.
- TechnicalEach runtime reports timing differently. Accurate stage boundaries may need adapters per runtime and can add overhead that distorts what is measured.
- DataTraces can contain prompts, transcripts or audio. Developers may refuse to upload them, so the product must work with timings only.
- CommercialThe market evidence is one public discussion with unverified speed claims. Whether developers pay for measurement rather than a faster engine is untested.
