About this appAI proposal
Flatbed turns a clean digital PDF into one that looks like it came off a scanner. Skew, paper grain, uneven toner, edge shadow, noise and compression are applied on your own device, in the browser or from the command line. Your file is never uploaded.
It is for people who handle document workflows and for developers who need scanned-looking output in tests, demos and pipelines. You tune each effect, preview it page by page, and save presets so every batch looks the same.
Users of existing online tools say the results look fake and that they must upload files to someone else's server. Flatbed processes locally and gives you control over the effects, so the result is more believable.

- Why this name
- Flatbed is the glass surface of a scanner. The name is two plain syllables and points to the scanning look and the local, on-device idea.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Runs fully on your device
Processing happens in the browser with WASM or in the CLI. Files never leave your machine, and the app works offline once installed.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.

How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- No loop in the product. Reached through developer communities, search for 'make PDF look scanned', and open-source repository visibility. Output files carry no visible branding, so use does not spread by itself.
- Do they become customers?
- Free local use may convert to paid for batch and API needs. Test whether free CLI users hit batch limits and pay, and whether platform teams buy an embeddable library.
- First customers
- Developers and QA engineers at small document-processing or SaaS teams who need scanned-looking PDFs for testing and demos.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and Show HN: Post the free local version in the thread type where demand was already seen, with before and after samples.
- GitHub open-source CLI: Publish the core CLI and link to the paid batch and API tier in the readme.
- Search content: Write a guide on making PDFs look scanned without uploading them, aimed at privacy-minded searchers.
- First milestone
- Five paying users from the free CLI or web app for batch or API access within 60 days of launch.

RisksAI inference
- TechnicalLarge PDFs can exceed browser memory in WASM, and rasterizing many pages is slow on low-end phones. Some limits and a CLI fallback may be needed.
- CommercialA free open-source version may satisfy most users, leaving few to pay for batch or API. Demand beyond the Hacker News interest is unproven.
- RegulatoryScanned-looking output could be used to pass off edited documents as originals. Terms of use and clear limits on intended use are needed.
- Intellectual propertyThe name Flatbed is a common word for scanner hardware and may be hard to protect or conflict with existing marks. Check trademarks before use.
- CommercialRealism is subjective. If output does not look clearly better than existing tools, the main claim fails.
