About this appAI proposal
Fallbackline is a search gateway for people building AI agents. It puts web search, news and page extraction behind one REST API and one MCP-style tool interface. When a provider fails, times out or hits a rate limit, the gateway tries the next one you have configured.
It is for developers and small teams who today wire several search APIs into each agent and write their own retry and switching code. You bring your own provider keys, so you are not locked in. Every call returns the same response shape, whichever provider answered.
Each response says which provider served it, what failed before it, and what it cost. Run it managed, or self-host it, as the opportunity's evidence shows developers want.

- Why this name
- A fallback line is the backup path a call takes when the first one fails. The name says what the product does in two plain words.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
One API for search, news and extraction
Three endpoints with one response schema. Your agent code does not change when you swap or add a provider.

Transparent provider fallback
Set an ordered list per endpoint. Failures, timeouts and rate limits move to the next provider, and the response shows the path taken.

Tool interface for agents
Expose the gateway as an MCP server or a tool-calling schema so agents can call search without custom glue.

Bring your own keys
Use your own provider accounts. Switching is a config change, with no lock-in to the gateway.

From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.

How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- No loop in the product. It runs behind agents and is not visible to their end users. Growth comes from an open-source self-hosted release, documentation, tutorials and listings in agent tool directories.
- Do they become customers?
- Self-hosters are likely to find it through the repository and some may upgrade. Test whether they convert to managed hosting, and whether teams pay for logs and caps.
- First customers
- Solo developers and teams of 2 to 10 building AI agents that use web search, and who already pay for at least one search API.
- Where to reach them
- GitHub and open-source release: Publish the self-hosted gateway with a clear README and an MCP config example, and answer issues quickly.
- Agent developer communities: Post a write-up on fallback failures and fix patterns in forums and Discord servers for agent builders.
- First milestone
- Fifty self-hosted installs and ten paying managed customers within 90 days of launch.

RisksAI inference
- PlatformSearch providers may forbid proxying or reselling results in their terms. Bring-your-own-keys lowers this risk, but each provider's terms need checking.
- CommercialThe 1,281 GitHub stars show interest in a free self-hosted project, so developers may not pay for managed hosting. Willingness to pay is untested.
- TechnicalThe gateway adds a network hop and becomes a single point of failure. It must stay faster and more reliable than calling providers directly.
- DataProviders return different fields and ranking, so a common response schema may lose detail that some agents need.
- CommercialLarge AI platforms may bundle their own search tools, reducing the need for a separate gateway.
