Desktop and mobile: Initial setup happens once at a computer, but families access files and photos on phones throughout the day, with photo backup running in the background. Sample screens on a computer and a phone, in the proposed brand. Their numbers are sample data.

About this appAI proposal
Hearthbox gives households a private place for files, photos and documents that they control. Install a small app on a spare computer or home server, scan a code, and your family can reach it from their phones. No domain to buy, no tunnel to configure, no renewal date to remember.
Each household gets a free subdomain that it can leave at any time, and Hearthbox sets up the secure connection. Most people do not need a public website. They need a private alternative to cloud storage, so everything stays closed to anyone you have not invited.
It is for families and individuals who want less dependence on big cloud services but will not manage servers. Setup is a short checklist and every step is explained in plain words.

- Why this name
- A hearth is the warm centre of a home, and a box is the small machine that holds your data. Together they say private, domestic and simple.

Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.

How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Users invite others. Each household invites relatives to its box to view photos and shared folders. Invitees install the PWA and see the Hearthbox name on the sign-in page and in the app.
- Do they become customers?
- Invitees are often in other households who may want their own box. Test how many invited relatives start their own free household and how many of those upgrade.
- First customers
- Privacy-minded parents who are comfortable installing apps, own a spare computer or mini PC, and want to move family photos off Google.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and self-hosting forums: Share the no-domain setup and ask technical relatives of target families to try it and give feedback.
- Privacy-focused communities: Post setup walkthroughs and a clear explanation of what stays private to parents asking for Google Photos alternatives.
- First milestone
- Fifty households finish setup and keep their box online for 30 days, and ten pay for the Household tier.
Why people already pay for this
- Public claimDomain registration costs and renewal risks deter consumers from self-hosting
- Public claimMost consumers do not need permanent public web presence, only private alternatives to cloud services
- AI inferenceThe self-hosting accessibility problem remains unsolved after 6 years despite multiple attempts and ecosystem progress
- Public claimFree subdomains without vendor lock-in are the proposed solution

RisksAI inference
- TechnicalHome hardware, routers and mobile networks vary widely. Reliable tunnels and one-step installs on spare computers are hard to make work for non-technical users.
- CommercialFree subdomains and relay traffic cost money. Free users may never convert, and the material shows no proof that consumers will pay.
- PlatformA PWA on phones has limits on background photo upload, especially on iOS, which may weaken the automatic backup promise.
- RegulatoryRelaying traffic and hosting subdomains invites abuse, such as phishing, which needs reporting and takedown processes.
- DataIf a home box fails and the user has no backup, family photos are lost. Backup must be easy and clearly explained.
