About this appAI proposal
Deckhand is a self-hosted web interface for Docker Compose. Create a stack from a form or import an existing compose file, deploy it, watch its services and change it, without hand-editing YAML or opening a terminal.
It is made for development teams and DevOps engineers who run containers on their own or private servers, want to avoid vendor lock-in, and do not want the overhead of Swarm or Kubernetes.
Your compose files stay plain files on your hosts, so version control and the command line still work. Deckhand adds validation before deploy, live status, and team features such as roles, audit logs and backups.

- Why this name
- A deckhand is the crew member who does the routine work on your own ship. Two plain words, easy to say, and it suits a tool that handles the daily chores.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Visual stack editor
Edit services, ports, volumes and environment variables in forms. The compose file updates beside them, and you can still edit it directly.

Validate before you deploy
See a diff and a list of problems, such as a bad port or missing volume, before anything changes on the host.

Live service status
Reactive updates show each container's state, restarts and logs without refreshing the page.
No member yet
One-click redeploy and rollback
Pull new images, redeploy a stack, or return to the previous compose version if it fails.

What it could be worthEstimate
What a software business making this much sells for today, from real deals. Pick a monthly revenue.

$194,000
Sale range $132,000 to $263,000
$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- No loop in the product. Deckhand runs privately on customers' servers, so its use does not show it to others. It reaches teams through content, open communities, search and word of mouth between engineers.
- Do they become customers?
- Exposure is limited, so every reach is through direct effort. To test: whether free Community users on one host convert to Team when they add colleagues and more hosts.
- First customers
- Small development teams of 3 to 15 people who run production apps with Docker Compose on a few self-managed servers, without a dedicated platform engineer.
- Where to reach them
- Self-hosting communities: Share a free Community tier and walkthroughs in homelab and self-hosting forums, and ask for feedback on team needs.
- Technical content: Publish guides on safer Compose deploys and rollbacks, aimed at teams who outgrew SSH and scripts.
- Direct outreach: Contact small agencies and software shops that host client apps on their own servers.
- First milestone
- Ten teams on the free tier, and five paying for Team within 90 days of launch.

RisksAI inference
- CommercialSelf-hosters often expect free open-source tools. Willingness to pay for team, backup and audit features is untested.
- TechnicalRound-tripping between forms and hand-edited YAML without losing comments or anchors is hard and could erode trust.
- DataThe tool holds host access and environment secrets. A flaw could expose customers' servers, so security review is needed.
- PlatformCompose and Docker Engine changes could break the agent, and Docker could add its own interface.
- Intellectual propertyThe star count shows interest in an existing project. Deckhand must stay original and not copy its code or branding.
