ScreensConcept
Desktop and mobile: Teams create and manage share links and policies at desks, but also need quick mobile access to create expiring file links on the fly. Sample screens on a computer and a phone, in the proposed brand. Their numbers are sample data.

About this appAI proposal
Handoff is a file-transfer service you run yourself. Members create expiring, encrypted share links for files kept in your own S3-compatible bucket, such as AWS S3 or Backblaze B2. Recipients open a link and download. Nothing passes through a third-party service.
It is for technical teams and privacy-conscious organisations that want data ownership and control over retention. Only signed-in members can upload, so there is no public upload page to abuse. Admins set expiry, download limits and who may share.
It installs from one container and the admin app works as a PWA on phones. A managed option is planned for teams that want the control without running servers.

- Why this name
- A handoff is passing something directly from one person to another. The name says the file goes straight across, with no middleman.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Expiring share links
Set an expiry, a download limit and an optional password on every link. Expired files are deleted from your bucket.

Your storage, your keys
Connect any S3-compatible bucket, including S3 and Backblaze B2. Files are encrypted before they are stored.
No member yet
No public upload surface
Only signed-in members can upload. Outside people receive files through links you issue.

One-container install
Deploy a single container image with a short config file. Few dependencies to maintain.

What it could be worthEstimate
What a software business making this much sells for today, from real deals. Pick a monthly revenue.
If it makes
Worth about
$194,000
Sale range $132,000 to $263,000
$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Shared outputs. Each share link opens a small download page that shows the sender's organisation and a line saying it is sent with Handoff. Recipients see how a private transfer works.
- Do they become customers?
- Recipients are often at other organisations with the same needs, but most will only download once. Test how many click through to install it or ask their IT team about it.
- First customers
- Engineering and IT leads at companies of 20 to 200 people in the EU that already keep data in S3 or Backblaze B2 and must meet GDPR retention rules.
- Where to reach them
- GitHub and self-hosting forums: Post a short guide on replacing Firefox Send with a self-hosted setup, with a working container example.
- Direct outreach to IT leads: Contact EU firms with data sovereignty needs and offer a free setup call.
- First milestone
- Five teams in one vertical on the paid support or managed tier within 90 days of launch.
Why people already pay for this
- VerifiedGitHub repository gained 2898 stars in 2038 days
- Public claimFirefox Send was a public file-sharing service that users relied on but is no longer available
- Public claimThere is demand for self-hosted alternatives to public file-sharing services
- Public claimUsers want file-sharing without public upload capabilities and with storage backend flexibility

RisksAI inference
- CommercialSelf-hosted tools are often free and open source. Teams may use the free tier forever and not pay for support or hosting. Willingness to pay needs testing.
- TechnicalEncrypting large files in the browser and resuming interrupted uploads is hard on phones and slow connections.
- RegulatoryBuyers with GDPR or sector rules will ask for proof of compliance. Handoff supports their controls but cannot certify them.
- PlatformRunning on customers' servers means supporting many setups and storage providers, which raises support costs.
- CommercialThe evidence shows interest in the open-source project but not that organisations pay for a managed or supported version.
