About this appAI proposal
Tallyhouse is a spreadsheet workspace you install on your own server or private cloud. Teams edit sheets together in the browser, and files, formulas and history stay on infrastructure your organization controls.
It is built for teams that keep working data in spreadsheets but have rules about where that data may live: data residency, privacy policy, or a wish to stop paying per-seat cloud fees. It opens and saves common spreadsheet files, so people keep their habits.
Unlike a desktop spreadsheet, shared editing is built in. Unlike a cloud tool, it runs inside your network. Install it as a PWA and it feels like an app on any device.

- Why this name
- A tally is a count, and a house is a place you own. Together they say numbers kept at home. Two plain words, easy to say.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.

Shared editing in the browser
Several people edit one sheet at once, with visible cursors, comments and a change history per cell.

Opens and saves common formats
Import and export xlsx and csv so existing files and habits carry over without a rewrite.

Works on an internal network
No public internet needed. The PWA installs on laptop or phone and keeps recent sheets available offline.

What it could be worthEstimate
What a software business making this much sells for today, from real deals. Pick a monthly revenue.

Worth about

Sale range $132,000 to $263,000
$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Users invite others. Users invite colleagues and partner teams into a shared workspace on the same server. Shared sheets pull more staff in, and each new user sees the product name at sign-in.
- Do they become customers?
- Invitees inside one organization are covered by that organization's licence, so growth means more seats, not new buyers. Test whether one team's use leads other departments to request their own deployment.
- First customers
- IT leads at small public bodies and clinics in Europe, 50 to 500 staff, who must keep data on their own servers and want to stop paying for cloud spreadsheets.
- Where to reach them
- Self-hosting communities: Share the free Community edition on forums and open-source lists where people look for on-premises tools.
- Direct outreach: Contact IT managers at local councils and clinics with a short pilot offer and a data-residency checklist.
- First milestone
- Five organizations in one sector pay for the Team tier after a 30-day pilot.

RisksAI inference
- TechnicalSpreadsheet compatibility is hard: formulas, formatting and xlsx files from Excel may not convert exactly, and users will notice every mismatch.
- CommercialFree open-source engines already exist, so buyers may self-install without paying. Value must come from support, collaboration and admin features.
- PlatformThe shared stack assumes hosted Supabase and Vercel, but customers run on-premises. Packaging for self-hosting adds work and support load.
- CommercialEnterprise and regulated buyers have long security reviews, which can slow the first paying customers.
- TechnicalReal-time editing with offline changes is complex and can cause merge errors on large sheets.
