About this appAI proposal
Patchwell is a back office for teams that build a browser, or any large client app, and want users to pay for it directly. It sells subscriptions and licenses, and gives paying users and partners access to the source under terms you set.
Contributors sign your Contributor License Agreement once, then see only the repositories and branches their plan allows. You see who pays, who contributes and which license applies, in one place, so a small team does not have to stitch together billing, legal forms and access lists.
It does not host your code or build your browser. It sits beside your existing Git host and keeps the rules of a source-available model in one clear record.

- Why this name
- A patch is a code contribution; a well is a dependable source of funds. Together: contributions and funding in one place.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Plans with source access
Define tiers such as user, supporter and commercial licensee, and attach what each can see: builds, early channels, source read access.

One-time CLA signing
Contributors sign your CLA in the browser. Each signature is dated and versioned, and re-signing is requested when you change the text.
No member yet
Access follows payment
When a subscription lapses, repository access is removed on your Git host. When it renews, access returns. No manual lists.

License keys and seats
Issue keys for individuals and organisations, count seats, and let a licensee admin add or remove people.

PricingAI proposal
The material gives no competitor prices for this kind of tool. Netscape's $40 per seat is an unverified public claim. These tiers are a starting point to test.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Shared outputs. Each team publishes a hosted plans and CLA page. Users and contributors who pay or sign see Patchwell on checkout and signing pages, with a small footer link.
- Do they become customers?
- Visitors are mostly users of the browser, not other browser teams. Test whether a footer link brings any team to sign up; most growth will likely come from direct outreach.
- First customers
- Independent teams of 2 to 15 people building a browser or browser engine, who already take donations or sponsorships and want a paid plan.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and forums: Post a write-up on funding browsers without search deals and invite teams to a pilot.
- Direct outreach: Email maintainers of alternative browsers with a working demo set up for their project.
- Open source funding communities: Offer talks and templates on source-available plans and CLAs.
- First milestone
- Three browser teams run a paid plan through Patchwell and at least one reaches 100 paying users.
Why people already pay for this
- Public claimNo major browser has ever sustained its own development independent of a search engine's funding, even Netscape which charged $40/seat in the 1990s
- Public claimOrion is completely free to use with only optional donations
- Public claimFunding browser development entirely on donations to a commercial business would be completely unprecedented
- Public claimOrion states on its own website: Trusted by 4 million users

RisksAI inference
- CommercialThe material says no major browser has sustained itself on direct payments. Patchwell sells to teams that may not earn enough from users to pay for it.
- RegulatoryA CLA is a legal document. Teams may expect legal advice, and signing rules differ by country. Patchwell must supply templates only, with clear disclaimers.
- PlatformAccess sync depends on Git host APIs and permissions that can change or be limited.
- CommercialThe buyer group is small: independent browser teams. Demand may need to widen to other source-available desktop apps.
