About this appAI proposal
Folio Bench is a React component kit for teams that build document intake flows, review screens and agent tooling. It gives you viewers for PDF, DOCX and XLSX, plus upload, bounding box citations and e-signature fields, all under one consistent API.
Instead of stitching together several file viewer libraries and patching the gaps, you install one kit and style it to your product. Components are built to cope with large files, bad files and slow networks, with clear loading, error and fallback states.
The core is meant to be open for inspection. A commercial licence adds the advanced components, support and update guarantees that teams shipping to customers need.

- Why this name
- A folio is a sheet of a document, and a bench is where developers work. Together they suggest a workshop for document parts.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
One viewer API for PDF, DOCX and XLSX
Open any of the three formats with the same props, events and theming, so you do not wire up a different library per file type.

Bounding box citations
Link extracted values back to the exact spot on the page or cell range. Highlights scroll into view and stay aligned when users zoom.

From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.

How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Visible inside customers’ products. The viewers run inside customers' products. The free tier can show a small 'Built with Folio Bench' mark in the toolbar, which other developers at the customer's clients or partners may see.
- Do they become customers?
- Viewers of the mark are often end users, not developers, so few will buy. Test whether the free tier mark, docs and GitHub-style listings bring developers who start a paid trial.
- First customers
- Engineering teams of 3 to 20 developers at startups building AI document extraction or intake products, where one engineer owns the review screen.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and developer forums: Share demos and a write-up of the edge cases solved, following the interest the source library drew.
- Open-source repository and docs: Publish the core with live examples so developers can try it in minutes and find the paid components.
- Direct outreach to AI document startups: Offer a free integration of the citation viewer in return for feedback and a case study.
- First milestone
- Ten teams using the core in a prototype and five paying for the Team tier within 90 days of launch.

- Public claimExisting file viewer and document component libraries were evaluated but found insufficient, with none having all required functionality and polish.
- AI inferenceBuilding polished PDF/XLSX/DOCX viewers that work at scale is non-trivial and involves solving many edge cases.
- Public claimMultiple customers requested access to the UI components used in their commercial product.

- This app · Component packagingnpm packages built with a bundler, plus a docs siteThe product is a library that customers install, so it needs versioned packages and live examples.

RisksAI inference
- TechnicalDOCX layout fidelity in the browser is hard. Some Word files will render differently from Word, which could disappoint users who expect exact output.
- CommercialAn open core may let teams use the free tier forever. The paid line between core and commercial parts has to be tested early.
- CommercialThe source library came from a company that sells a document platform and gave it away. Free competition from that team could limit what buyers will pay.
- Intellectual propertyOpen-source parsing dependencies carry licence terms that may limit commercial bundling. Each must be reviewed before release.
- TechnicalLarge files and many formats multiply edge cases, so support load may be high for a small team.
