About this appAI proposal
Overcoat is a proposed brokerage app for tech employees who want umbrella liability coverage but don't want to fill out dozens of forms or call ten brokers. You answer a short guided intake once, and see priced options from several carriers side by side.
Your details go to the carriers you choose and nowhere else, so there is no resale to lead-generation sites. Plain-language notes explain what each limit covers and what it leaves out. A licensed human steps in only where rules require it.
The brokerage earns a commission from carriers. Overcoat shows that commission on every option and still lists the better-fit policy when it pays us nothing.

- Umbrella coverage, priced in the open.

- Why this name
- An overcoat is the layer you put over everything else for protection, like umbrella cover. It is short, easy to say, and warm.
In the first version
Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
One guided intake
Answer questions about home, cars, household and assets once. The app reuses them across every carrier instead of repeating forms.

Commission shown on every option
Each quote states whether we earn a commission. Best-fit options with no commission are still listed and ranked on merit.

What it could be worthEstimate
What a software business making this much sells for today, from real deals. Pick a monthly revenue.
If it makes
Worth about
$194,000
Sale range $132,000 to $263,000
$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- No loop in the product. Customers arrive through content, community posts and assistant integrations. Policies are personal, so the product has no built-in sharing step. Word of mouth among coworkers is possible but not designed in.
- Do they become customers?
- Everyone reached is a potential buyer. To test: whether tech employees finish intake and bind a policy, and whether assistant-based discovery brings anyone beyond community posts.
- First customers
- Tech employees at L3-L8 level in one or two states, who own a home and cars and have no umbrella policy, or suspect they overpay for one.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News and tech forums: Post a candid explainer on umbrella coverage and open a waitlist for the thread's commenters.
- Tech employee communities: Offer free coverage-gap reviews in finance channels at employers and in personal-finance groups.
- AI assistant directories: List the MCP integration where personal assistant users look for new tools.
- First milestone
- Ten bound umbrella policies from tech employees in one state, within 90 days of launch.

RisksAI inference
- RegulatorySelling insurance needs agency licences in each state and compliance with disclosure rules. A first launch likely has to be limited to a few states.
- CommercialEvidence says brokers make little on umbrella. Commission per policy may be too small to cover acquisition and licensed staff costs.
- DataCarrier rating access may be gated by appointments or limited APIs. Instant multi-carrier prices may not be possible at first.
- PlatformAI assistant distribution depends on assistants that support MCP or APIs and may change terms or fall out of favor.
- CommercialShowing commission on each option builds trust, but may confuse users, and carriers may object.
