About this appAI proposal
Stepwise turns a screen walkthrough into a written guide. You do the task as you normally would and talk or click through it. Stepwise returns numbered steps, each with a short title, a plain description and a screenshot.
It is for teams and product companies who need process docs, user guides and onboarding notes but keep putting them off because a blank page is hard to start. You get a solid first draft instead of an empty document.
Then you refine it in a built-in editor: reword a step, crop a screenshot, delete a detour, add a warning. Nothing needs to be copied between tools, so you do not lose your place when you come back to the guide later.

- Why this name
- Documentation is a list of steps, and the product starts from the steps you already take. Stepwise is two plain words that are easy to say.

Members say which features they would use. It tells PWAS what people want; it changes no score.
Record once, get steps
Capture a browser tab or window while you work. Stepwise splits the session into ordered steps with titles and descriptions.

Screenshots placed for you
Each step gets the screenshot taken at that moment, so you do not capture, name and paste images by hand.
No member yet
Editor built for refining
Edit text, reorder or merge steps, crop images and add notes in one place. The draft is a base, not a final.

Resume where you left off
Drafts keep your position and unfinished steps flagged, so returning to a guide does not mean re-reading all of it.

$120,000 a year in revenue
From 87 software businesses listed and sold on Empire Flippers in the last year, revenue vetted by the broker: they sell for about 19× their monthly revenue, most between 13× and 26×.
Measured on profit, the middle deal is 32× monthly net profit: about 2.7 years of profit.
An estimate, not an offer or financial advice. A real price depends on profit, growth, churn, how much of the work is the owner's, and the buyer.
How it would growAI proposal
How the product would reach new customers through its own use, and how the first ones would be found. A plan to test, not a result.
- Built-in loop
- Shared outputs. Guides are shared as links or exports to colleagues and end users. Each public guide page carries a small 'Made with Stepwise' footer that links to a free trial.
- Do they become customers?
- Readers of a guide can become authors, because they often have processes to document too. This needs testing: whether readers click through and record a first guide. Many will only read.
- First customers
- Small SaaS product teams of 5 to 30 people, where a support or product lead writes user guides and internal runbooks by hand.
- Where to reach them
- Hacker News: Post a Show HN with a demo recording turned into a guide, and ask for feedback on drafts.
- Support and ops communities: Offer to convert one real process into a guide for a team in exchange for feedback.
- Help-centre content: Publish public guides made with Stepwise for common tasks, each linking to the tool.
- First milestone
- Ten teams record at least three guides each in a month, and five of them pay for Pro or Team.
Why people already pay for this
- Public claimPeople spend excessive time writing documentation for workflows and processes, whether for product users or team processes.
- Public claimStarting documentation creation presents a significant barrier: opening a blank document causes friction, fragmentation through screenshots and writing, and context loss on returning to the task.
- Public claimNo existing tool adequately solved the workflow documentation problem for this audience.
- Public claimA screen-recording-based approach can produce accurate, structured documentation that serves as a solid foundation for minor refinement rather than requiring manual creation from scratch.

RisksAI inference
- TechnicalCapturing clicks outside the Stepwise tab needs a browser extension, which adds install friction and store review. A tab-only PWA recorder may give poorer step detection.
- AIGenerated descriptions may misread screens or miss intent, so guides could contain wrong steps. Users must be pushed to review before publishing.
- DataRecordings can capture passwords, customer data or keys. Redaction, retention limits and clear consent are needed before teams will trust it.
- CommercialThe builder's own video2docs already does this. The evidence is a public claim only, so willingness to pay and a clear difference are unproven.
- CommercialModel and storage costs per recording could erode margin on a free tier or a flat unlimited plan.
